First Friday PK: Bardavon 150th Anniversary Open House
The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Feb. 1 with a free open house.
The event will launch a year of special events and feature the Juilliard-trained Wholly Brass Band, according to a release from the Bardavon. Also, Henry's at the Farm restaurant, at Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa in Milton, will provide complimentary hors d’oeuvres.
The public will be invited to roam the theater, walk across the stage and visit dressing rooms as Bardavon crew and staff discuss what occurs behind-the-scenes.
Also, crew and staff will share stories about the well-known people who have appeared at the historic venue on Market Street. These include Mark Twain, John Philip Sousa, John Legend, Aretha Franklin and Carlos Santana.
Adding to the festivities will be Bardavon house organist Juan Cardona, who will provide demonstrations on the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. The instrument was built for the Bardavon in 1927 and is one of the few of its kind still in use in its original theater location.
The open house, part of the First Friday celebration, will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. At 6 p.m., Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison and Bardavon Executive Director Chris Silva will lead a toast and cut a “Mark Twain cake” designed and donated by Frida’s Bakery and Café in Milton.
At 7 p.m., the Wholly Brass Band will lead those in attendance through the stage door at the rear of the theater and head to the King’s Court Brewing Company on Cannon Street, where the celebration will continue.
